Elihu Hutton served in the Virginia Militia and served as a scout for Gen R. E. Lee at Elkwater in 1861. On 16 Apr 1863, he formed Company C, 20th Virginia Cavalry and was elected as Captain of Company C; he was promoted to the rank of Major on 22 Nov 1864 and he was later promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel.

His brother, Eugenius Hutton, first served in Company F of the 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment. He then enlisted and was elected on 16 Apr 1863 as 2nd Lt in Company C, 20th Virginia Cavalry, serving under his brother Elihu Hutton. Eugenius Hutton was killed in action on 03 Sep 1864 at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Elihu Hutton was the great-grandson of Moses Hutton who served as a Colonel in Virginia during the Revolutionary War.
